Alcohol is one of the biggest culprits when it comes to falling off the healthy-eating bandwagon. Not only are alcoholic drinks caloric, but one too many will have you swarming the snack table.
If you have a hard time controlling your intake when imbibing at parties, Layne Lieberman, RD, author of Beyond the Mediterranean Diet: European Secrets of the Super-Healthy, suggests taking a hint from the Europeans and opting for a spritzer, which slashes the calories of each drink in half.
“Many of my Italian girlfriends add sparkling mineral water to their Prosecco,” says Lieberman. “The sparkling Italian wine is slightly less caloric than other wine because it has lower alcohol content.
“For desserts, Lieberman teaches another European-inspired trick: “Think ‘petit fours,’ a French term that literally means small oven,” she says. “The term is used to identify small bite-sized cakes typically served at the end of a meal. So — no more than a few bites of your absolute favorites.” Allowing yourself a taste of each dessert will keep you from feeling deprived, while keeping your portions in check.
