Mediterranean Diet May Reduce Risk Of Deadly Breast Cancer

A new study finds the Mediterranean diet reduced the risk of developing one of the deadliest forms of breast cancer.

The study, published by the International Journal of Cancer found that the Mediterranean diet reduced the risk of developing estrogen-receptive negative breast cancer by 40 percent.

The study looked at 62,000 women over 20 years. The Mediterranean diet in the study was rich in legumes, seafood and olive oil.

Estrogen-receptive negative breast cancer is not linked to estrogen, and is considered the most dangerous form of the disease.

The study found a strong link between the Mediterranean diet and reduced rates of ER-negative breast cancer among post-menopausal women even in a non-Mediterranean population. Although moderate alcohol consumption is part of the traditional Mediterranean diet, it was excluded in this study because of its known link to breast cancer.

As discussed in my book Beyond The Mediterranean Diet: European Secrets Of The Super-Healthy, those who consume a diet high in plant proteins (nuts, seeds, legumes), whole grains, seafood, healthy fats found in cold pressed extra virgin olive oil and grass-fed dairy live longer and have a reduced risk of major diseases.

Although several studies support that healthy lifestyle choices like eating well and exercising are linked to longevity and reduced risk of cancer, there are no guarantees. Genetics and environmental factors also play a role. Having regular checkups and knowing how to perform breast self exams are also crucial to prevention.
